Rubber and Sponge Cord

Rubber and Sponge Cord

Rubber and sponge cord, also known as ‘rubber rope or sponge rope,’ is widely used in sealing applications where an exact size moulded O-ring is unavailable. Rubber cord is available in diameters ranging from 1mm to 40mm* and can be used in various industries, including automotive, aeronautical, chemical, electrical, environmental, petrochemical, food and pharmaceutical. We offer a variety of rubber cords made of EPDM, neoprene, nitrile, silicone, and Viton® ‘A’ that can be combined with various adhesives (available to purchase separately). On request, we can also supply other diameters, coil sizes, rubber materials, and scarf jointed vulcanised O-rings.

Our closed-cell sponge cords are available in two material options with distinct properties: neoprene and silicone. Neoprene sponge cord is frequently used as an effective seal to prevent gas, liquid, and dust from escaping when machinery is used, or as an alternative to foam backer rod. These materials are much easier to compress and manipulate than rubber alternatives and can be used in both internal and external environments. High-temperature seals for doors and ovens, external electrical seals, and food processing machinery seals are all common uses for silicone sponge rubber cords..

Many other rubber and sponge cord materials and sizes can be manufactured to your specifications. If you need help determining which type of cord is best for your application, please contact our technical sales team, who will gladly assist you. Alternatively, our chemical compatibility table may assist you in determining the suitability of the material you require when in contact with specific chemicals.

Please see the links below for more information on the various types of cords.

Rubber Cord

EPDM Rubber Cord

Manufactured from a synthetic blend of ethylene, propylene and a diene comonomer. EPDM provides excellent resistance to diluted acids, ageing, ozone and weathering. It is primarily used in exterior sealing applications. Temperature range: -50°C up to +130°C.

Neoprene Rubber Cord

Providing good strength, flexibility and resistance to abrasion. Neoprene rubber cord is a good, general purpose sealing material and is used in applications that require resistance to weathering, ageing, ozone and mild acids. Temperature range: -35°C up to +110°C.

Nitrile Rubber Cord

Offering excellent resistance to petroleum, greases and oils. Nitrile rubber cord is primarily used in automotive, gas and petrochemical sealing applications. It also provides good resistance to abrasion. Temperature range -30°C up to +120°C.

Silicone Rubber Cord

Available in a selection of colours, silicone rubber cord has a non-stick surface and offers excellent compressibility across a broad temperature range. All options are WRAS approved and conform with FDA and EC food contact regulations. Temperature: -40°C up to +200°C.

Detectable Rubber Cord

Manufactured from an FDA approved elastomer that contains additives which are visible to metal detector scanning equipment. Metal detectable silicone is popular in the food industry as it helps to identify product contamination. Temperature: -60°C up to +200°C.

Viton Rubber Cord

Manufactured from a branded flouroelastomer that offers unrivalled resistance to hydrocarbons, organic solvents, petrochemicals and mineral acids. Viton® ‘A’ rubber cord is commonly used in automotive, gas and petrochemical sealing applications. Temperature range: -20°C up to +275°C.

Neoprene Sponge Cord

Neoprene sponge cord is manufactured from a high quality closed cell sponge rubber that is easily compressed and highly pliable. It displays the same characteristics as neoprene rubber cord, but is softer and easier to manipulate. It is commonly used to isolate liquid, gas and air. Temperature: -40°C up to +90°C.

Silicone Sponge Cord
Available in a range of grades including; flame retardant, food approved and metal detectable. Silicone sponge cord is highly compressible, offers excellent temperature resistance and is a good electrical insulator. It is used in the food industry and in electrical enclosures. Temperature: -40°C up to +200°C.

Alternative Cord

Polyurethane Cord and Tube

Available in a range of finishes and shore hardness’s, polyurethane cord and tube is tough, durable and offers very low coefficient of friction. They are commonly joined to create endless lengths for use in power transmission and line shaft conveyor applications. Temperature: -30°C up to +80°C.

PVC Cord
Providing good strength, excellent chemical resistance and moderate flexibility. PVC cord is commonly used in textile covers as Keder cord or power transmission applications. It conforms with EC food contact regulations and is extremely durable. Temperature: -20°C up to +65°C.
