Petron Thermoplast can convert a broad range of polyurethane and rubber compounds into custom components and OEM consumable parts using our CNC machining capabilities, such as vertical milling, turning, and routing. Our CNC and CAD capabilities enable us to manufacture and repeat everything from simple 2D shapes to complicated 3D components in both low and high volumes as needed.Rubber and polyurethane machining is a great option for moulded rubber or cast polyurethane components, as these manufacturing methods often necessitate the commission of tooling. Machining parts eliminates tooling, making it a cost-effective manufacturing method for small-scale projects and applications. Moreover, CNC machining typically enables manufacturing to have tighter tolerances than those manufactured by a moulding process. We also provide a thorough plastic machining facility from a large inventory of sheet, rod, and tube materials.
Profiled seals and gaskets, wipers, bushes and spacers, damping elements, rollers, and moulded rubber replacement components are all examples of applications.
To provide a quotation and fabricate your part, we require a dimensional drawing, a pre-existing unworn sample, and the grade of rubber or polyurethane required.
Polyurethane materials have the excellent load-bearing capacity, abrasion and impact resistance, tear strength, and oil, water, and grease resistance. The grades listed below are resistant to hydrolysis, allowing them to retain properties and operate well in steam and hot water implementations. These grades can be turned on a lathe but cannot be routed or milled.
Nitrile rubber is highly resistant to gasoline-based fluids, oils, and greases. It also has good mechanical properties like abrasion resistance and tensile strength and is commonly used in the automotive industry. These grades can be turned on a lathe but cannot be routed or milled.
EPDM is commonly used for seals and gaskets in external services due to its excellent water, ozone, and ageing resistance. EPDM is a long-lasting material that works well in contact with alkalis, diluted acids, and ketones. These grades can be turned on a lathe but cannot be routed or milled.
Silicone rubber grades outperform other rubber materials over a much wider temperature range. They also have good release characteristics and are resistant to ozone, weathering, UV light, and moisture. These grades can be turned on a lathe but cannot be routed or milled. The FDA approves all options for use in food contact implementations.
FKM is a high-performance rubber with excellent resistance to high temperatures, acids, gasoline, and oils. It will not become brittle when ozone, flame, or high temperatures are exposed. FKM is also known as FPM and is marketed under the brand name ‘Viton®.’ These grades can be turned on a lathe but cannot be routed or milled.
Due to its excellent weathering, ageing, and ozone resistance properties, neoprene rubber grades (turned) are a common choice for outside sealing applications. These grades can be turned on a lathe but cannot be routed or milled. It is compatible with most oils and greases and has moderate abrasion and tear resistance.
All the polyurethane and rubber grades mentioned above are only available for turning, making them ideal for bespoke flat circular seals with outside and inside diameters. Our milling and routing capabilities would be used to build complex machined rubber and polyurethane modules from standard sheet materials.
For available grades, please see our polyurethane sheet and rubber sheeting pages. Please remember that the selected grade must have a shore hardness of at least 70°A to be suitable for machining.
